Our Story
It Started With One Young Man’s Journey
The Young Afro-Canadian Organization (YACO) was founded by Dylan Nkala, whose own story is one of transformation and hope. After moving out at just sixteen and spending time on the streets, Dylan saw firsthand how easily young people can lose direction without guidance or structure. His life took a turn when he chose to rebuild — earning his trade and building a successful career as an electrician. Through that process, he discovered how essential mentorship, community, and belief are in shaping a young person’s future. Dylan realized that while many cultures have strong systems to guide youth into adulthood, the Black community often lacks that same bridge. YACO was created to fill that gap — a bridge between potential and opportunity, connecting young Afro-Canadians with mentors who understand their challenges and share their journey.
From Dylan’s Story to a Shared Mission
What began as Dylan’s personal experience has grown into a collective mission — to ensure that no young person has to face life’s toughest moments alone. Through mentorship, school partnerships, workshops, and hands-on community programs, YACO helps youth find direction, build stability, and grow into confident leaders who uplift their peers and communities. We’re not just preparing youth for work — we’re preparing them for life.
Our Vision
A future where every young Black Canadian is seen, supported, and celebrated. A future where empowerment is not an exception — it’s the norm. Because when one youth rises, a community rises with them.
